Mac OS X market share dips in February '08

Web metrics firm Net Applications has released market share data for February. The numbers may make for a reversal among those accepting or rejecting the methodology, depending upon how strongly one feels about Apple. For those who don't know, Net Applications gets their numbers from web surfers.

We use a unique methodology for collecting this data. We collect data from the browsers of site visitors to our exclusive on-demand network of live stats customers. The data is compiled from approximately 160 million visitors per month. The information published is an aggregate of the data from this network of hosted website statistics. The site unique visitor and referral information is summarized on a monthly basis.

It's about who is using the Internet, a method that likely favors the Mac over Windows.

Salley with his steely resolve

JONAS Salley's instinctive Ivorian spirit could return Adelaide United to the winner's list in its clash with Newcastle Jets at Hindmarsh on Sunday.

Adelaide sorely missed Salley's enforcer role during the 0-2 capitulation to Central Coast last Saturday.

A one-match ban halted Salley from putting his muscular frame amid the Mariners' pretty boys.

But the Jets could feel the full brunt of Salley with the Ivorian due to rip off the shackles as Adelaide tries to overcome two losses and a form slum.

He is hoping to release the tension he had encountered after nervously watching United give up second-spot on Saturday.

"We didn't play that well against Central Coast," Salley said.

"I was a little bit nervous watching the game.

Moderator says anti-English bigotry is 'like sectarianism'

In Scotland, we have got used to football as a context for perpetrating sectarianism so I don't think we can pass off lightly anti-English remarks which are made during matches. It is too easy to dismiss this as healthy rivalry. It is not. "Caricatures that seek to diminish others that are barbed with prejudice and misinformation are not part of a healthy society. It is nobody's business to be disrespecting one another simply because they are English or Catholic, or whatever."The Kirk leader made her comments after taking part in the Moderator's annual visit to London. She said: "The conversations I had with many of the people I met prompted reflection of whether the changed political situation will affect relations between our countries."It is time to reflect on attitudes: the things we accept, perhaps unthinkingly, that we use to strengthen our sense of identity; the caricatures that are underpinned by humour in thinly disguised prejudice.

Goodbye barbie, hello pizza oven

FIRE, earth and water. The modern Australian male has long used the humble barbecue as a conduit for these basic elements. Now men across Melbourne's suburbs are tossing their tongs in favour of more sophisticated implements - with delicious results.

For 58-year-old mechanic Ivan Mazeyko, the journey started some years ago. He wanted to build a wood-fired oven in his backyard. He talked about it with friends and family, but no one thought it would ever happen.

In preparation, he did a course on building a wood-fired oven, read books and spoke to lots of other men. Then he knocked down a corner of his garage. Once he got going, he couldn't stop. He built the oven. And a charcoal-fired barbecue like those of his native Uruguay. And cupboards using materials from his old indoor kitchen.

Romanov says plumber's bid to buy Hearts 'just a pipe dream'

We do care that your club is being systematically dismantled before your eyes. It gives us great satisfaction and is everything you and and your fellow "big team supporters" deserve for the arrogant displays that we have had to put up with over the last couple of years. Get used to us. We'll be around for a long time to come. Pity your club won't be. .

Danny Hoch's 'Taking Over' Extends 2-Weeks at Berkeley Rep

After two weeks of rave reviews and sold-out houses, the Obie Award-winner Danny Hoch extends his world premiere one-man show Taking Over for two-weeks at Berkeley Rep.

Taking Over, originally scheduled to close on February 10, will now play through February 24 on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage. It's the third show in a row to earn an extension during the Theatre's brilliant 40th birthday season.

"In Taking Over, Danny Hoch captures the indelible characters of his New York neighborhood, where the melting pot is boiling over with ethnic and economic tensions. He transforms effortlessly across the boundaries of race, age, and gender, masterfully depicting a city in transition with comical and compassionate results. A pioneer of hip-hop theatre, Danny took Berkeley Rep by storm with the world premiere of Jails, Hospitals & Hip-Hop in 1997.

How Pitman gave rescue package wings

As a result, Virgin Money chief executive Jayne-Anne Gadhia and adviser James Lupton of Greenhill "came to my home one Sunday afternoon with all their papers". He took one look at the plans and declared "it won't fly". "I believed it was too optimistic. I said you don't have enough capital." But they refused to give in and began revising the plans under his tutelage. "Effectively, I was acting as an unpaid adviser."

By the time Royal Bank of Scotland, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank demanded the consortium name its chairman as a condition of providing funding, he was ready to sign on. They later backed out, but Sir Brian has only become more hands-on - beefing up his role to executive chairman and effectively running proceedings.
