| Boarder slapped with hefty fine for sidewalk skating
I don't wax any curbs on the street. Just mind my own business, keep the place nice. I pick up trash." A sympathetic judge later cut the fine down to $90, but the incident caused police officials to re-examine their skateboarding prohibition on downtown sidewalks, and while they will continue to enforce the traffic code, they said they might do more to make the rules clear to everyone. "What we've asked the city to do, several weeks ago, is to post it better," police Lt. Reid Lindblom said. "The main complaint is that the people who are issued a citation aren't aware of the law." Pat McKee: High School Q&A
Generally, football and basketball teams have the kind of community support that allows for schools to use these books as a form of fund-raising for their athletic departments. Some schools produce similar books for spring sports as well, but if your school has not found the advertising support to make some money (or at least break even) on producing a spring sports program, then it probably has chosen not to produce one. If you want to see such a program produced for a spring sports in your school, meet with the athletic director and ask about it. And if ad revenues are the reason, then perhaps you can assist in seeking sponsor ads from others who share your feeling. Question: New Albany In. won the state basketball title in 1973. Who were the players on that team? (Erick from New Albany) Answer: A team photo I have for the New Albany '73 state champions lists the following players -- Dick Webb, Don Perry, William Finley, Dale Slaughter, Rick Haws, Robert Grant, Mike Carter, Julius Norman, Charles Mitchell, Norman Mukes, Howard McLean and David Townsend.
Metro apartment vacancies remain high
That's despite a reduction in the number of landlords offering concessions to attract tenants and despite increases in average rental rates of up to 4 percent for efficiency units. The overall vacancy rate for 20,012 Des Moines-area apartment units in the January survey was 8.5 percent, up from 8.1 percent a year earlier, the survey by Carlson, McClure & Associates Inc. found. The area with the highest vacancy was the south side, where nearly 4,300 units are located with 12.6 percent of them open. The western suburbs, where nearly 8,800 units are located, had a vacancy rate of 8.7 percent. The area in and around downtown, where roughly 1,200 units are located, half of which are high-rise, had a vacancy rate of about 5 percent. Hubbell's Heath Bullock said the trend in the office market is toward owner-occupied space.
