Paying for a summer visit to Israel

Chad Sinanian doesn't want a fancy house with gates and guards.

He doesn't want a six-figure sports car that goes so fast it flirts with time travel.

His only dream -- the all-consuming wish that drives his destiny -- is to visit Israel this summer.

Now, comes the hard part.

The 40-year-old Sinanian, a Danbury resident since 1992, has neurological disabilities, poor coordination and emotional problems stemming from what he calls a "troubled" childhood.

Granted, it's expensive enough to fly half-way around the world and spend 10 days in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the rest of Israel. But the price tag grows exponentially when you factor in a trip for someone with special needs.

How much are we talking here? The cost is about $14,000 through a company called "Israel 4 All," which specializes in sightseeing for people with special needs.

Skylights, wraparound porch give McClain a ranch feel

The McClain (405-15) is a beautiful ranch-style home with skylights, wraparound porch and a three-car garage. It features two stories, four bedrooms, three bathrooms in its 2,488 square feet, not to mention bay windows in front and several more windows across the facade.

The front door of the McClain is flanked by two windows. Entry brings a guest into the foyer between the kitchen and the living room.

The living room has two built-in bookshelves with a large window seat between, ideal for cozy afternoon reading sessions. Along one wall is a fireplace with a window on each side.

Behind the spacious living room is an elongated family room with a wood-burning stove on the rear wall. The stove could be converted to a pellet stove, or a gas fireplace, if desired.

From the Editor :

The England side for the first Test against New Zealand is pretty much nailed on to be team that played against the Select XI with Sidebottom replacing Tremlott. Do you reckon that team will beat the Black Caps? Let's hear your predictions, real or whacky, for the forthcoming series.

After the record-breaking efforts of their batsmen, South Africa's bowlers will be keen to make sure that Bangladesh don't get a foothold in the first Test. Will the Bangladesh batsmen hold out or will this one be over in quick time?

Finally, we've selected our team of month for February. Take a look, give it a think and tell us where you disagree.

Remember you can send long rants in to cricket365.media@gmail.com and have your (educated?) views posted in a mailbox.

Otherwise, we'll get your wise cracks and pearls of wisdom published on here as soon as possible.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

Do you have any ideas to save money? We ran a couple of stories this week talking about the tough economic times that could lie ahead. And we heard some great advice from experts and the people putting them into action.

They say you need to write down a budget and stick with it. Save money and take advantage of your 401k plan as much as possible. Other advice is find hobbies that don't cost as much money (play basketball instead of buying video games) cut down on your number of stops per week at your favorite high end coffee shop and read stuff off the internet instead of subscribing to a magazine.

So, do you have any ideas? Feel free to share them. You know what to do.

Sweden goes after Pirate Bay

Different story if you were reading five comic books your friends lifted from the local corner store. File trading starts on the premise of a downloaded file that was not paid for. I'm not sure how one justifies in their mind the taking of intellectual property, such as a song or movie, off the Internet for free, when we'd be up in arms someone walked into our kitchen and helped themselves to the contents of our fridge. Swedish researchers set up honey water feeding stations in a massive wind tunnel and used fog, lasers and high speed cameras to track exactly how the bats flew. They found that when the bats flapped their wings downward they created tiny air cyclones above the wings called a leading vortex which pulls the animal upward and allows them to hover in place without expending nearly as much energy as simply flapping their wings. Without this trick they would not have the strength to hover in place in order to feed as the vortex provides as much as 40 percent of the lift force which keeps the bats in the air. The bats used the thumbs and fingers embedded in the skin membrane of their flexible wings much like flaps on an airplane to alter the curve of the wing and create the lift force necessary to hover.

They want to set the record straight after some accuse them of intentionally setting the fire.

The fire broke out in the Lasita family's Casual Court home just after 3a.m. Sunday morning.

The family, including their sets of four-year-old and four-month-old triplets, got out safely.

The Red Cross has put them up in a hotel. 9News spoke with the family Monday night.

They say they may have nothing left, but they have each other – and that's everything to them.

"I opened the garage door, and it was bright orange and flames just flew out," said Tim Lasita.
